August Meeting
President Jane Narborough was welcomed back and she introduced Jennifer Oakley who was guest president for August. Jen was president from 1978 to 1980 and had many amusing tales to tell. Members were interested to hear that the subscription for WI was £1.75p for the year!! Jen is still a very lively committee member of Rhayader WI.
During August some members went to Aberystwyth where they enjoyed a day out and an afternoon at the musical Chess in the Arts Centre Theatre.
Jen Oakley remarked on the beautiful displays at the WI exhibit at the Metropole Hotel, at the Victorian Festival at Llandrindod Wells. Over 1300 people went to view the exhibits. With four of Rhayader's members stewarding at the Craft display for County Federation as well as members putting in entries and demonstrating.
A letter of thanks was received from Rhayader St John's Ambulance for the donations raised at the Birthday event. They will notify us as soon as the new ambulance arrives.
Members also discussed possible participation in the Tidy Wales Cleanup campaign.
The speaker for the meeting was Pippa Boss who worked for VSO in Zambia for eight weeks based in Lusaka and working on the Zambian Volunteer co-ordinating committee, which encouraged local people to get involved in volunteering. She showed many beautiful pictures of the local area as well as pictures of the local people and wildlife. Of particular interest, was a Palm Sunday photo taken inside Lusaka Cathedral. Pippa had many interesting tales to tell, of vehicles getting stuck in mud and breaking down and the local people appearing out of the bush to help. Members agreed it had been a most interesting and enjoyable evening.
The competition for a cheese dish was won by Shirley Jones and Morfa Shaw.
