June Meeting
This was our Jubilee meeting and members were dressed in red, white and blue and wore tiaras and crowns for the evening.
Ida and Joan had attended Howey's 65th Birthday party and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Sylvia, Jane N, Helen, Margaret and Julia enjoyed the Federation Quiz at Crossgates. Sylvia and Jane have now completed an advertising flyer to be inserted in the local newspapers and also in the Rhayader Newsletter. Our details will also be included in the New Community Directory.
The members' trip to Broneirion has now been booked for the 23rd August by Jen and Gwen. An invitation has been received from Felindre WI to a Guest Evening - "From Wales to the West Bank".
Members were advised that a group photograph would be taken at Penrally House the next day to re-enact a late 1940's photograph from our archives.
We will be having a promotional table outside the 'Lamb & Flag' selling jam and cakes as well as handing out "Flyers" to promote the WI. We are also having a stand at the 'Green Fair' on the 14th July at the Leisure Centre and members were encouraged to donate any unwanted items or anything saleable to the stall to raise funds.
Sylvia has designed a banner with the new WI Logo on it. The members were quite happy that the new banner should be purchased at a cost of about £40.
Margaret Lloyd gave a very detailed delegate's report for the AGM in London, saying how impressed she had been with the singing of the Anthems and the whole atmosphere. She also told us about all the ladies knitting to get in the Guinness Book of Records. The resolution for the employment of more Midwives was carried.
The speaker for the evening was Jill Rolfe, talking on Costume Design in the Theatre. Jill had started her career as a sewing machinist in a factory and progressed to being in charge of making and altering costumes in some of the country's largest theatres. She had also worked on a large scale production of Cinderella in South Africa in her early years. She had many amusing tales to tell and brought much humour to the evening. She brought with her many accessories and costumes used in the theatre productions and pictures of many famous stars she had worked with. A vote of thanks was given to Jill by Jen Oakley for giving us such an entertaining evening.
A delicious Jubilee supper was then enjoyed by the members. Chris had made a beautiful Celebration Cake and members each took a slice home to be enjoyed at a later date.
The Room Raffle was won by Dorothy Ingram and the competition for a favourite piece of costume jewellery was: 1st Shirley, 2nd Sylvia and 3rd Angela.
